Three people who travelled from Kenya to Rwanda have tested positive for the Covid-19 virus.
In a statement dated March 23, 2020, seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the Rwandan Ministry of Health informed that the trio was among the 17 cases the country confirmed on Monday, March 23.
Of the new cases, nine individuals travelled into the country from Dubai (UAE), 2 from the US, 1 from Qatar and 1 India. Another individual had come into contact with a positive person and had been identified through tracing.
Following the confirmation, Rwanda now has 36 confirmed Coronavirus cases.
The Ministry of Health informed that the persons were under treatment and in stable condition, and had been isolated from other patients. The government is tracing persons who might have come into contact with the newly confirmed patients.
The Rwandan government has since moved to close non-essential businesses, ban travel between cities and districts, as well as non-essential movements outside homes.
"Any Rwandans or legal residents returning to the country will be subject to a mandatory 14-day quarantine at designated locations," the statement reads in part.
On March 23, Kenya's Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe announced that one more individual had tested positive for Covid-19, bringing Kenya's total Coronavirus tally to 16.
Speaking during his daily presser at Afya House, CS Kagwe announced that the latest confirmed case had come into close contact with one of 8 individuals who tested positive on March 22.
He went on to reveal that the government had managed to track down 646 persons who had come into contact with the confirmed individuals and that 96 of them were released from the follow-up program.
Kilifi Deputy Governor Gideon Saburi is among the 8 who tested positive for the Covid-19 virus after his recent travel to Germ.
CS Kagwe stated that action will be taken against the county official after he defied the regulations to self-quarantine following a foreign trip.
The government has stepped up its efforts in curbing the virus, with citizens and holders of valid permits asked to self isolate for 14 days after arrival. Should they develop any health concerns, they must reach out to the government through given Coronavirus hotlines.
