Neighbours came to the rescue of People Daily correspondent in Nyamira County Evans Nyakundi after a gang of 10 attempted to kidnap him.

The Media Council of Kenya released a statement on Tuesday, April 14 with a section of it reading, "The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) is deeply concerned by this turn of events and that this is second such attempt to intimate him in less than a month, ostensibly because of his journalistic work."

One member of the gang was arrested while the other nine managed to escape in the incident that happened on Monday at around 7 pm.

The gang stormed Nyakundi's home at Tente, near Governor John Nyagarama's residence, armed with crude weapons.

The family of Nyakundi made a distress call which was responded to in the nick of time by neighbours who forced the gang to flee.

One member of the gang was not lucky as he was caught by the neighbours and handed a beating before being surrendered to the police.

In an interview with Kenyans, Nyakundi spoke about the incident, "People raided my house because of politics, I think because of a publication purportedly authored by me.

"The rest managed to escape but one of them was arrested by the police and that is where I'm headed currently to make a follow up with other details."

Nyakundi added that at the time of the incident he was not at home but got a call from his wife, "My wife raised an alarm and I also called the OCS because I was not around and the police responded.

"The same group had come two weeks ago to my house and they told me that they have been given an assignment by a politician and the same politician called to talk to me through one of the goons' phone.

"I also called my colleagues who came and witnessed that there are some people who were given instructions to deal with me."

Nyakundi noted that one of the gang members who was arrested yesterday was also among the group who had come previously.

The corresponded also maintained that the story published was not authored by him, as he only shared the name Nyakundi with the author but under a different first name.
