Residents of Ngong' Town in Kajiado County were treated to a spectacle on Sunday, April 18, as two women tied up an alleged thief and frogmarched him through the streets.
The women claimed that the man had offered to help them to carry a bag of shopping worth Ksh1,790 before allegedly vanishing with the bag as one of the women was distracted at a nearby butchery.
The women demanded to know where the man had taken the shopping, attracting the attention of onlookers who joined in seeking to establish the truth.
The man pled his innocence as he was frogmarched through the streets, with the women promising to take him to the police.
The women revealed their suspicion that the man had sold the shopping supplies at a drinking den to purchase liquor.
"I had done some shopping. He told me, 'let me help you'. When I got to the butchery to buy some meat, I turned around to pay him and he was gone with the shopping.
"He has not eaten it all, it's not possible. There's a place he has sold it. Let him say where he has sold it," one of the women insisted.
The frustrated woman further disclosed that the alleged theft had angered her as she had also recently lost her job due to the Covid-19 pandemic, wondering what she was supposed to eat with her children.
She was backed up by the other woman who referred to the alleged victim as her cousin, stating that she would net her cousin be robbed in broad daylight.
"He can't steal from my cousin and expect me to stay silent. I am not going anywhere. Right now, there is the Coronavirus, so there's no money," she stated.
Some of the onlookers threatened to beat up the man if he failed to reveal where he had allegedly taken the shopping.
The man, however, maintained his innocence claiming that the alleged victim had offered to buy him some liquor before an unidentified motorcycle rider stole the shopping.
A source in Ngong' who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke revealed that the victim and the alleged thief were well known to each other and could be considered friends.
"They are very well known to each other here in the neighborhood. They are part of a close community in this area so it was a surprise.
"But the story we are hearing is very long and complicated so we don't know what to believe. I don't think they have taken him to the police yet," he stated.
