Kenya has reached a milestone in the fight against Covid-19 after the first doctor recovered after testing positive.

Speaking outside the Administration Wing at the Kenyatta National Hospital on Monday, April 20, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe noted that two doctors had taken ill but one of them was completely healed.

He further noted that the conference was held in honour of healthcare workers who risk their lives on a daily basis to fight the pandemic which has claimed 14 lives in the country.

"We are also happy that two patients have recovered and been discharged. Out of those two cases, I can also report, one is a doctor.

"We had doctors who had tested positive and one doctor is still under treatment while the other one has recovered, We now have a total of 69 recoveries," stated Kagwe.

During the address, the CS also pointed out that discussions on boosting the healthcare workers' welfare ordered by President Uhuru Kenyatta were nearing completion.

"The reason why we are here is essentially to take care of our frontline people to encourage and tell them we are thinking about them.

"I can also confirm that there are many people in the private sector who want to do something and it is in progress," he added

He noted that in Spain, 10 per cent of all positive cases were health workers. Kenya, he explained, was doing everything possible to ensure that this is not a fate with which we would have to contend.

Other players also chipped in to ensure that medics are prepared in all ways possible including psychologically.

"As Kenya Medical Association, we have set up weekly debriefing sessions to ensure that they also have psychological support," Stated the association's President, Jacqueline Kitulu.

Positive cases in the country have climbed to 281 after 11 more cases were reported on Monday.
