A boda boda rider saved a young man who was almost assaulted by a mob after being found living in an abandoned matatu in Ngong, Nairobi on Saturday, May 2.

The man had pleaded for mercy, revealing that he had nowhere to go after being kicked out from his house over rent arrears.

The boda boda rider, Amos Ochenge, took the young man into his home offering him temporary shelter and shared a video of the mob nearly descending on the young man as he appealed to other Kenyans to help.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke on Sunday, May 3, Ochenge revealed that he was heading home from his work as the curfew approached only for him to encounter the mob.

"It was around 6.50 p.m., almost time for the curfew so I was heading home. He used to stay in a place called Kibiko.

"They wanted to beat him up because they found him sleeping in one of the wrecked matatus in the area but some people in the crowd pleaded for him to be forgiven after he explained his situation," Ochenge revealed.

He disclosed that he chose to share the video to find support for the young man as he himself was also finding it difficult to get by, particularly with his income affected negatively by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The young man, identified as Obadiah, also spoke to Kenyans.co.ke and revealed that he had been without a place to stay since he was evicted in November 2019.

He disclosed that he had previously worked at a car-wash and later ventured into the jua kali sector.

"I was kicked out in November 2019 because of the rent arrears. I've had nowhere to sleep, I've just been taking it day by day, seeing where I can sleep every night.

"I was only at the abandoned matatu for around one week. They found me and they wanted to beat me up but I told them the truth, and eventually they let me go.

"I used to do some work washing cars but recently I had started getting into jua kali," he revealed.

After Ochenge posted the video of the near-assault on social media, he received overwhelming support from Kenyans who rallied together to help Obadiah.

Obadiah revealed that he was evicted over rent arrears amounting to Ksh6,000.
