Residents of Kiminini in Trans Nzoia County were reduced to fighting for donations that were thrown over the gate by frustrated CDF officials.
A video that surfaced on social media on Thursday, May 7, showed the Kiminini residents fighting for donations that were being hurled at them.
The incident took place at the Kiminini Constituency Development Fund (CDF) Office where residents were gathered to receive crucial supplies as the effects of Covis-19 reduced the ability to earn a living.
The residents, most of whom appeared to be the elderly had come to receive food donations that were promised to them.
Some of the residents resorted to scaling the CDF office gate in order to get their hands on some of the donations being handed out.
From the video residents were set to receive flour, cooking oil and some masks which were all tossed into the air for residents to grab bringing back memories of the dramatic tossing of paper towels by US President Donald Trump to Hurricane victims in Puerto Rico in October 2017.
The locals who had gathered to get the donations threw caution to the wind as they did not observe social distancing and few had masks on.
Residents in the video were heard complaining about the manner in which the donations were being distributed to them.
A woman in the video is heard saying, "You see that, what is this now?... this is very wrong. Why are they throwing it, they should have just given it out one at a time."
Another resident is heard encouraging the crowd to document the bizarre incident on video and expose the officials online; "Take photos and put it on the internet."
On Saturday, April 11, the government banned uncoordinated food donations and distribution, directing that the activities be done through county governments, county commissioners and Covid-19 Fund Board only.
This followed a stampede in Kibra as residents jostled to gain access to donations made by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
