"Get on the ground. I am doing my work, why don't you wear a mask," one of the officers could be heard shouting, as they manhandled Mworia.

A bodaboda operator plying the route was also nabbed and roughed up by the police officers for violating the one passenger rule as issued by the national government.

They later escorted them into a waiting police vehicle.

Police officers in the country have over the course of the Covid-19 pandemic been put on the spot over the use of excessive force in implementing the nationwide orders on safety.

Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, the country has recorded six deaths, all allegedly attributed to police brutality.

The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into several reported cases of police brutality in the country, urging members of the public to report such incidents.

"As part of the investigation process, IPOA appeals to victims or witnesses of the various incidents to come forward and register their witness accounts with the authority," a statement by IPOA dated April 1, 2020, read in part.

In response to a warning issued to police officers on the use of excessive force by Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai on March 26, 2020, Rift Valley Commander George Natembeya on April 2, 2020, sacked four police officers over misconduct while enforcing the nationwide curfew.

The officers who were stationed in Mauche and Nakuru Town areas were fired after breaking limbs of 3 residents on the evening Wednesday, April 1.

Natembeya, while addressing the media, cautioned officers against employing excessive force in enforcement also urging members of the public to cooperate in ensuring the process is effective.

Citizens have however been urged to adhere to the safety measures issued by the national government in the fight against Covid-19, to minimise the chances of engaging with officers enforcing the orders.
