Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho on Wednesday, May 28, announced that remnants of the dreaded Mungiki had resurfaced and were exploiting traders in Central Kenya.
Speaking at Ngurubani Stadium in Kirinyaga County during a tour, Kibicho instructed county commissioners to launch a crackdown on Mungiki members accused of disrupting trade in the region.
"Mungiki have returned and they are causing fear among the traders. They should be tamed," Kibicho stated.
He stated that traders had complained that the outlawed sect had resurged to extort them making it difficult to conduct business peacefully in the region.
Additionally, Kibicho lamented that the sect, largely based in Kirinyaga County, forced traders to pay protection fees.
"The Mungiki are a real menace and they should be dealt with ruthlessly. Their criminal activities will not be tolerated in this region or any other part of the country," Kibicho stated.
During the same event, the PS warned police officers enabling ba owners to flout the closure order over Covid-19 of termination.
"Some police officers and commissioners have a conflict of interest in these bars and that is why drinking is going on at night.
"Officers caught encouraging the sale of alcoholic drinks in bars which have been closed to fight the pandemic will face disciplinary action," he cautioned.
