Three passengers have died as eight others were injured in a midday accident at Makutano area of Athi River, Machakos County on Thursday, May 28.
A report aired by NTV detailed that the accident involved a 14-seater matatu and a bus.
According to eyewitnesses, the speeding matatu rammed into the bus which was parked along the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway.
The matatu veered off the road a few meters away from the accident scene.
Eyewitnesses added that the bus was dropping off staff who were heading to work at Konza City.
An emergency team responded and evacuated survivors, who were rushed to the Machakos Level 5 Hospital to undergo first aid and treatment.
The bodies of the deceased were moved to the Machakos Hospital morgue.
According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), as of April 2020, the number of passengers who had died due to road crashes reduced drastically by 24 % compared to the same period in 2019. By February 17, 76 passengers had died compared to 100 who had perished by the same period in 2019.
On the other hand, the number of pedestrian deaths increased by 20%. According NTSA data, a total of 458 people have lost their lives compared to 417 who died in February 2019.
The majority of these deaths were of vulnerable road users – pedestrians, motorcyclists, and cyclists.
In addition, nearly one-third of deaths were among passengers – many of whom who killed in unsafe forms of public transportation, especially, boda boda passengers.
