Kenyans in the United States have not been left out of the latest Black Lives Matter protests judging by a viral video showing hundreds of protesters chanting Haki Yetu! - a familiar Kenyan protest phrase - in what is understood to be a protest at Minneapolis city in the US state of Minnesota.

The video that surfaced online on Sunday, May 31, showed hundreds of both black and white protesters chanting the slogan urged by a man assumed to be Kenyan.

At first, the protesters seem to be awaiting a cue from a leader, before a black man with a good Kiswahili accent moves them into action.

He shouts, "We can say it in Swahili, We say haki yetu," he energetically shouts while urging them on.

The crowd, in a chorus, follows his lead and continues with the chant in the 30-second clip.

Kenyans have been invested in the demonstrations that were caused by the murder of George Floyd allegedly by a police officer attached to the Minneapolis Police Department.

A Nyeri resident by the name, Alex Ndiritu, was thrown into the limelight on Saturday after suggesting that protesters should burn the White House for ignoring the plight of the minority in the supposed land of milk and honey.

President Donald Trump's administration has, however, failed to directly address the murder, instead, turning his guns towards the protesters.

In an address at Cape Canaveral, Florida, during the launch of a SpaceX spacecraft carrying two NASA astronauts into space, Trump claimed that the 'mob violence' was destroying American dreams.

“The mobs are devastating the life’s work of good people and destroying their dreams. “There will be no anarchy. Civilization must be cherished, defended and protected. The voices of law-abiding citizens must be heard and heard very loudly," stated Trump.

Meanwhile, the protests have continued to wreak havoc with Los Angeles being forced to shut down Covid-19 testing centres.

LA Mayor Eric Garcetti confirmed that the centres had been closed due to safety concerns. Previously, the protesters had been accused of looting private properties in the course of their demonstrations.
