The Directorate of Criminal Investigations on Tuesday, June 2, warned parents of online sexual predators taking advantage of children using the internet for zoom classes and digital learning programs.

Through a statement, DCI stated that four different parents had complained about the worrisome trend.

"The predators sent children messages in their inboxes complimenting their looks then after gaining their trust, went ahead to ask them for their nude images among other despicable acts," reads the statement.

Further, the body added that it was investigating other cases of a similar nature that had been reported in other parts of the country.

The investigative body appealed to affected parents to furnish police officers with such information

"Provide our officers with details of the perpetrators such as the user names, phone numbers, email and social media accounts that have been in contact with their children," DCI stated.

At the same time, members of the public have been urged to report criminal activities of such kind to the Children Protection Unit or to the nearest police station.

DCI also advised parents and guardians to constantly monitor the whereabouts of their children and be wary of the content they access online.

The body argued that some of the content could be harmful and detrimental to their lives.

"Some of the activities can lead to dire consequences such as kidnappings, defilement or even death," DCI cautioned.

The worrying trend comes at a time when President Uhuru Kenyatta hinted at the reopening of schools during the Madaraka Day celebrations.

He stated that he had directed the Ministry of Education to fast-track and finalize ongoing consultations with the stakeholders.

Their findings would provide an appropriate calendar for a gradual resumption of education in the country.
