The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has arrested five suspected robbers in Bungoma County.

The suspects are believed to have orchestrated a series of robberies in the county including one in which they shot and killed Stephen Gacheche, robbing him of Ksh 2 million.

The nab comes after detectives arrested 27-year-old John Wanyonyi in whose house several electronics reportedly stolen from various households, a raincoat, military boots, settled land agreement and cash sale receipts of Sh62,000 were found.

The suspect then led officers to a hideout near Shell petrol station where four more suspects were arrested.

“From their house more electronics including two TV sets, five mobile phones, two refrigerators, solar panel; assorted new clothes, beddings and mattresses (purchased between 9th and 13th June 2020 as per supermarket receipts); three metal bar cutters, riveting gun and handcuffs were recovered,” DCI stated on Twitter.

All the suspects in custody are set to be charged accordingly.

The four more suspects include 48-year-old John One Are and 35-year-old Milton Onyango (both Ugandans), Linet Adhiambo (26yrs) and 33-year-old Brian Ochieng.

This comes as Nairobi records a spike in petty crimes involving both secondary and primary school students.

Nairobi Regional Police Commander Philip Ndolo on June 19, said that more teenagers are taking to the streets and engaging in petty crimes to pass the time.

“We have realised, during the curfew and since the closure of schools where we have children who are idle at home, parents are not very keen on what their children are doing,” he explained.

However, the Nairobi Police Boss noted that since the pandemic hit, crime rates in the CBD have dropped significantly.

April recorded the lowest number of reported crime cases at 180. In May, Ndolo said, 264 criminal cases were reported while January had the highest number of reported crimes at 821.

Ndolo said, normally, at least 1,500 cases would be reported around this time.
