There was drama at a prime beach property in Tiwi, Kwale County after a group of youth faced off with a local businessman.
According to a video shared online by Daily Nation on Tuesday, June 23, the youth showed up armed with documentary evidence and openly told off the tycoon who they accused of grabbing the parcel of land.
In the video, the young men, including one who claimed to be an heir to the property, are seen shouting at the tycoon while he responds.
"We ni nani wewe? (Who are you) and what authority do you have?" questioned residents.
"Our parents used to farm on this land. I also used to come here to chase monkeys. My grandfather brought me here and told me this was my land.
"The land was being contested for in court and the court told us that no one would exploit the land. However, these rich tycoons came and are fencing it," they went on.
The youth further appealed to President Uhuru Kenyatta to step in and help protect the poor from losing their property.
"We are lamenting on an issue which Daniel Moi in 1979 stated that he had returned all the land in this area. We have the decree and the tycoons and land registrar should not forge documents," added another one.
In his response, the tycoon showed his own documents proving that he owned the land and vowed only to vacate after the court orders him to.
He further explained that his father and grandfather had lived on the parcel showing that he rightfully owned the property.
"Let the court decide and if it directs that I migrate I will. But my parents and grandparents were born here and I am a citizen of Kenya. This hotel over there is mine and this is propaganda," he stated.
The value of the property under contention is still not known.
