Former Kakamega Woman Representative Rachel Ameso Amolo was on Friday, June 26, appointed as a member of the powerful Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC).

In a gazette notice, the former MP will serve in the commission for a term of six years.

"She will replace Dr. Lorna Mumelo as a Non-MP Commissioner," the notice read in part.

The PSC is one of the Independent Commissions in Kenya established under Article 127 the Constitution of Kenya to ensure smooth functioning of the Houses of Parliament, the Senate of Kenya and the National Assembly of Kenya.

The Commission consists of the Speaker of the National Assembly, as the chairman, seven members appointed by Parliament and one woman and one man appointed by parliament from persons who are experienced in public affairs but are not Members of Parliament. The clerk of the senate is the Secretary to the commission.

Members of the PSC enjoy enhanced office staff, government vehicle -fueled and with a State driver- and Sh40,000 allowances per sitting.

While serving as the Women in 2013, Ameso stated that women in Kakamega were sidelined in decision-making and noted that the female gender was most affected by poverty.

"I have established a centre to tackle gender-based violence and we are running a successful project of donating sanitary pads to all school-going children in Kakamega County. We cannot achieve much because we lack funds.

Ameso once in 2013 expressed her opinion over the state of women leadership in Kenya, noting that "my focus is on assisting women to have easier access to loans and government funds and fighting for allocation of funds to county reps to initiate more development."

Ameos is a graduate of BA in Business Administration from Kenya Methodist University (KEMU) in 2010.

During the 2017 election, Elsie Busihile Muhanda was elected to the post becoming the second women representative of Kakamega County
