Kenya Records Highest Number of COVID-19 Cases

Kenya's COVID-19 cases rose to 6,673 on Wednesday, July 1, after 307 individuals tested positive in the preceding 24 hours.

Speaking during the daily Covid-19 press conference, Health CAS Rashid Aman stated that the latest numbers were the highest recorded since the onset of the pandemic

3,591 samples had been tested in the same period of time bringing a cumulative figure of 173,355 of tests done so far.

Out of the 307 cases, 215 were male with 92 being female. The youngest is a 1-year-old while the oldest is 81 years of age.

1 more patient succumbed to the virus bringing the total tally of lost lives to 149. However, on a positive note, the Health also announced that 50 more patients had been discharged over the same period, bringing the latest figure of recovered patients to 2,089.

The distribution of the latest cases across the various counties were detailed as; Nairobi  154, Mombasa 38, Machakos 33, Kiambu 20, Narok 20, Kajiado 17, Busia 10, Kericho 4, Makueni 5, Nakuru 5, Kilifi 1, Kisumu 1, Kitui 1, and Uasin Gishu 1.

Addressing the talks regarding the opening up of the economy, the Health CAS reiterated the need to exercise caution while trying to ease the burden faced by a majority of Kenyans.

"The majority of Kenyans have been discussing the possibility of govt opening up the economy, this discussion is unavoidable. We have to balance between saving lives and saving livelihoods," he stated. 

He went on to share a story of a concerned Kenyan, residing in Ruaka, who made his way to CAS Aman's office to report his observation on residents of his neighbourhood flouting the measures and guidelines set by the government to combat the spread of the Coronavirus.

Also speaking during the press briefing, Health Director-General (DG) Patrick Amoth, gave an update on the number of health care workers who had tested positive for COVID-19.

186 of our workers have contracted Covid-19 in Kenya since the first case was reported locally, with the latest cases recorded at Shalom Hospital in Athi River," he announced.

"Today we have recorded the highest number of positive cases at 307. Even though our fatality rate is 2.3% which is better than the global average of 6.7%, the numbers point to increasing infections," he added.
