UPDATE 05/07/2020 13.20 p.m: Lugari MP Ayub Savula was released after being taken into custody at Mumias Police Station.
The lawmaker had earlier been arrested by police around Sabatia Market, and was accused of flouting regulations banning public gatherings to contain the spread of Covid-19.
Savula had hosted around 20 ward representatives from Kakamega County at his home on Sunday, July 5, to strategize on ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi's 2022 Presidential bid.
Lugari MP Ayub Savula was on Sunday, June 5 arrested in Kakamega County for flouting government regulations meant to curb the spread of Covid-19.
Savula was pounced on by police while fueling his vehicle at a petrol station located near Sabatia Market in Butere and taken to Mumias Police Station.
The MP was accused of flouting the ban on public gatherings after he hosted about 20 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) at his home in Manyonyi, Kakamega County on Sunday morning.
He was also expected to later attend a planned meeting to be led by Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi and Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula.
The Nambale meeting which comes amid wrangles in Mudavadi's ANC and Wetangula's Ford-Kenya was slated to be held in Nambale, Busia County.
Savula had disclosed that his meeting with Kakamega ward representatives was meant to shore up support for Mudavadi's presidential bid in 2022.
"I held a meeting with 20 ANC MCAs-Kakamega county at my home in Manyonyi. We discussed modalities of strengthening structures at the grassroots level and how best Musalia Mudavadi's presidential bid can be propelled ahead of the forthcoming 2022 general election," he tweeted after the meeting.
Mudavadi and Wetangula, perceived as the two senior-most leaders from the Western region had hinted at an alliance citing schemes to dislodge them from their parties and deny them a voice as the country gears up for a referendum on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report.
Talk has also been rife of an alliance incorporating Mudavadi, Wetangula and Deputy President William Ruto taking shape ahead of the polls in 2022.
On June 13, details emerged of a team set up to explore the modalities of a possible agreement after a meeting of Jubilee, ANC and Ford-Kenya legislators at Ruto's Karen office in Nairobi.
Reports from the meeting indicated that the Deputy President had given a green-light for his allies to engage Mudavadi and Wetangula's teams to craft a winning strategy.
“The meeting brought Jubilee (legislators from Western Kenya allied to the DP), ANC and Ford Kenya together.
"We have agreed to join forces to address the challenges facing our people. We have been treated badly and it is time this changed,” Mumias East MP Ben Washiali stated.
He noted that a technical committee formed following the meeting would present a report with its findings to Ruto, Mudavadi and Wetangula.
