Chuka Univeristy has received the greenlight to re-open in August by the Ministry of Education.
Speaking at the Tharaka Nithi-based institution on Wednesday, July 15, Education Principal Secretary Ambassador Simon Nabukwesi announced that the ministry was satisfied with the guidelines the university had followed ahead of re-opening in August.
Nabukwesi had visited the institution for inspection on Tuesday and was satisfied with the measures put in place.
The PS stated that postgraduate students in their final academic years in masters and PHD programmes, would be given the first priority.
“Once the finalist students have completed their studies, they will create space for those reporting in September,” he stated.
On his part, Chuka University Vice Chancellor Erastus Njoka indicated that the Institution had tried its best to meet the requirements ahead of reopening.
He added that the institution would provide alcohol-based sanitisers and soaps as well as thermo-guns to monitor temperatures of those accessing the institution.
Earlier in the month, Education CS George Magoha stated that all institutions allowed to reopen would have to meet Covid-19 regulations or risk closure.
“All the decisions that we have made with stakeholders regarding reopening of learning institutions may change as informed by reports from the Ministry of Health, prevailing circumstances and increased knowledge of the Covid-19," he stated.
All learners, lecturers and non-teaching staff would be required to use masks or face shields.
“Universities will ensure all learners and staff have masks. The universities may provide these at a subsidised rate to students and staff," the ministry added.
