Being one of the most recognisable faces on TV, Ismail started with her pursuing a Diploma in Public Relations at the University of Nairobi before upgrading it with a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism at the Kenya Methodist University (KEMU).

She began her media career at Iqra FM where she was a news anchor and reporter before she joined Sound Asia FM.

The journalist switched media houses in 2006 when she joined Radio Africa Group where she worked as a news presenter and reporter for Kiss 100 FM and Classic 105 FM.

She, later on, joined the Standard Group where she worked as a TV News anchor mostly on the 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. bulletins as well as a reporter.

Najma would later take a step back from TV, in an announcement misinterpreted to mean that she was leaving the station.

As her fans bid her goodbye, the anchor clarified that she “had gotten dental braces, which couldn’t allow her to read the news while wearing them," and she was still at the Standard Group.
