By virtue of their positions, Cabinet Secretaries, known as Ministers in the pre-2010 Constitutional dispensation, are scrutinized as they go about their work, and face immense criticism when they are embroiled in scandals.

Among those who would know of the public pressure that comes with making a big blunder is President Uhuru Kenyatta, who in 2009 was the Minister of Finance in former President Mwai Kibaki's administration.

Members of Parliament raised a red flag over the inclusion of an inexplicable Ksh9.2 billion in the year's budget estimates, before Uhuru denied wrongdoing while admitting that typographical errors may have been responsible.

"As to a question that there might be a computer error or a typing error or whatever, yes, it might be possible," he stated in a media briefing sparking further criticism.

Uhuru, however, dismissed the mounting criticism as the work of his political detractors and braved the storm, eventually running for President in 2013.

Kipipiri MP Amos Kimunya's appointment as Majority Leader on June 22 replacing Aden Duale marked a milestone in a political come-back, after his publicized resignation as Finance Minister in 2008 over the Laico Regency Scandal

Denying involvement in graft, Kimunya delivered a passionate speech at a public rally in which he declared to a cheering crowd that he would rather die than resign.

"One thing I'm not prepared to do, and I will not do, I will not resign. I would rather die than resign," he stated after facing a censure motion from Parliament spearheaded by then Ikolomani MP, former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale.

Two days later, Kimunya resigned. He, however, got a soft landing as he was appointed Minister of Transport six months later by former President Mwai Kibaki.

He made a failed stab at the Kipipiri MP seat in 2013 and lost to Samuel Gichigi, before reclaiming the seat in the 2017 polls.

More recently, The Service Party (TSP) leader Mwangi Kiunjuri was in the eye of the storm in January before being sacked as Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture.

Kiunjuri faced criticism and went viral when, at the height of the desert locust invasion, he advised Kenyans to take photos of the insects to share with the government.

This, he explained, was meant to help Kenyans ensure that the insects were indeed locusts.

Kiunjuri was fired from the Cabinet later in January and replaced by former Meru Governor Peter Munya. He went on to launch TSP in June.

Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa has been the subject of investigations due to his alleged involvement in a Ksh42 billion fake arms deal scandal in recent months.

Before being sacked in March, however, Echesa had already come under fire in January after he was linked to a human trafficking ring.

He found himself in trouble after it was established that 9 Pakistani nationals deported back to their country had been cleared by Echesa as cultural dancers. Echesa, however, maintained that he had done nothing wrong and shifted blame to the Immigration Department.

Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku was also on the receiving end of criticism from a section of Kenyans in 2013 during his stint as Cabinet Secretary for Interior.

In particular, contradictory statements and unanswered questions that characterized media briefings during the Westgate terror attack in 2013 saw him come under pressure.

Ole Lenku was axed from the cabinet in September 2014 amid growing concern on insecurity in the country.
