Former Nairobi Speaker Beatrice Elachi, on Wednesday, August 12, revealed that she was nearly doused in Sulphuric acid during the City Hall Commotion.

While appearing on JKLive, the speaker further disclosed that her life was threatened by gun-wielding youth carrying a coffin, hellbent on reducing the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) to ashes.

“I didn’t say governor, I said the chronicles of City Hall. He is also complaining about the cartels. The interests are beyond City Hall. The interests are so external that you will find people rubbing shoulders with people. That is the biggest challenge.

"I thank God I’m alive today… there was sulphuric acid… had I not been saved that day I wouldn’t be speaking to you today. It would have been tossed at me but God that day said it was not my time," she stated.

She also blamed the cartels for controlling City Hall while absolving Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko of any blame since he was also threatened by the cartels.

"Before you leave, a few people come, they are at the gate of KICC and are carrying a coffin with 'Rest in Peace NMS' written on it. They remove their guns and they salute and you wonder are we watching a movie," she added.

She further revealed that she felt safe after her resignation but experiences spouts of insecurity and has to look over her shoulder every time.

During the interview, she narrated instances on how the cartels frustrate investors including a case in which a woman was forced to part with Ksh100 million as handouts to be allowed to invest in the city.

"I think we have fantastic members of the county assembly and bright young people, a robust team that can transform Nairobi, given the opportunity," she added.

A section of MCAs stormed City Hall on July 28 and wanted to serve Speaker Beatrice Elachi with an impeachment notice signed by 59 members.

So bad was the chaos that Interior CS Fred Matiang'i withdrew licenses of officers involved in clobbering Mlango Kubwa MCA Patricia Mutheu.

Mutheu sustained injuries during the fracas to an extent she was admitted to hospital.
