Shoppers at Tuskys supermarket, Kisumu Branch were left in shock after auctioneers descended on the property and barricaded all three entrances.

Reports indicated that the auctioneers from Victoria Blue Services were acting on behalf of the landlord who was demanding Ksh26 million in rent arrears.

The retailer is reported to have managed to pay Ksh6 million by the time the auctioneers moved in.

Guards have since been deployed at the supermarket which hosted other shops including; Good Life Pharmacy, Safari Optica, Tuscom, among others.

A notice from the auctioneer noted that the supermarket had been given eight days to settle the debt, failure to which the property would be auctioned.

The supermarket's United Mall branch manager Wilson Kanyi has since declined to comment on the matter.

The notice came days after one of the Tusker Mattresses Director Stephen Mukuha stated that the relationship between the supermarket and landlords, banks, employees and other stakeholders had turned sour when trouble started.

However, he stated that the retailer was working to win them back.

“We want to pay suppliers on time, we want to go back to where we used to call our suppliers to come and pick their cheques and they would refuse,” he stated.

Tuskys, which has over 50 branches, has in the recent past been struggling to stay afloat and has been undergoing a restructuring process.
