Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Secretay-General Akello Misori on Tuesday, August 25 revealed that they are yet to be issued with a curriculum for Community Based Learning.
The Ministry of Education, the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and Kenya National Examinations Council, however, drafted a document on the guidelines for the programme.
Misori highlighted the importance of the Ministry coming up with a curriculum to enable smooth implementation of the programme.
"Let me just dispel the rumours that there is no curriculum yet to be approved to undertake this programme because it is basically an Ad-hoc arrangement to have learners engaged on issues of value and so on.
"If the Ministry and the KICD developed one then we are yet to receive one. I think for it to be uniformed all over, it would be appropriate. We have not been exposed to that kind of curriculum," he explained.
In the guidelines released on the Community Learning Programme, the Ministry clarified that activities are not meant to cover the curriculum designs or syllabuses but to engage learners to gain good personal habits, competencies, skills and values.
Under the guidelines, primary schools will cover four topics, life skills and values, health and fitness, learning area activities, environment and sanitation.
Secondary schools will cover eight topics; Citizenship, Environment, Creative Arts, Languages, Games and Fitness, Life skills, Home science, Mathematics and Financial Literacy
Misori commended the programme by the Ministry but highlighted some of the challenges that will arise during the implementation phase.
"The teachers who are supposed to engage these students are not the teachers who teach them, what this calls for is serious commitment and creativity among the teachers.
"Teachers who are likely not to be engaged in the short run are teachers who are involved in official programs like those having workshops on science and mathematics training," he explained.
Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang revealed that the Ministry has so far mapped out 300,000 teachers who will take part in the programme.
