Kenya has recorded 213 more Covid-19 positive cases in the last 24 hours bringing the total number of cases in the country to 33,016.
President Uhuru Kenyatta, in a press briefing at State House on August 26, noted that 241 patients have been discharged from hospital bringing the total recoveries to 19,296.
Regrettably, five patients succumbed to the disease bring the total death toll to 553.
Of the 213 cases tested, 139 are male and 74 are female while the youngest case is an 8-month-old infant and the oldest is aged 92 years.
Nairobi maintained the lead with 101 cases followed by Mombasa 19, Busia 17, Kiambu 12, Machakos 8, Kajiado 7, Isiolo 5, Kericho 6, Meru 5, Bomet 4, SambUru 3, Bungoma 3, Kilifi 3 and Kirinyaga 3.
Others were Kisii 3, Kisumu 2, Murang’a 2, Lamu 2, Nakuru 2, Makueni 2, Narok 1, Kwale 1, Tana River 1, and Uasin Gishu 1.
During his address, the head of state also directed Health CS Mutahi Kagwe to formulate strategies to identify weaknesses in the healthcare system.
"I direct the Health CS working together with Council of Governors Chair Wycliffe Oparanya to review the efficacy of our response to the pandemic, formulate strategies to identify weaknesses in our healthcare system and recommend ways of improvement," he stated.
He also extended the closure of clubs and bars for a further 30 days and extended the working hours of hotels and eateries from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. effective Thursday, August 27, 2020.
He also disclosed that the ban on the sale of Mitumba (second-hand clothes) had been lifted.
Nationwide dusk-to-dawn curfew (9 p.m. to 4 a.m.) was also extended for an additional 30 days in a bid to curtail the spread of the coronavirus.
He also ordered investigative agencies to expedite the probe into alleged corruption at the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) and table a report within 21 days.
For public gatherings, the Head of State reviewed upwards the number of people attending funerals and weddings from 15 to 100.
