Aspiring MP for Kampala Constituency, Uganda, Stella Nyanzi was on Saturday, September 19, arrested at the Busia border after crossing from Kenya following her tour to the country.

Ugandan police are yet to release a statement on her arrest but Nyanzi claimed that she was arrested for re-entering the country following her Kenyan tour.

"A car full of big men with stomachs in layer, thin black armed LDUs carrying AK47s and four military policemen wearing military camouflage have now surrounded my car. They are shouting at me to get out of the car. I have shouted back at them to ask what I have done wrong.

"I reminded them that I am a Ugandan in Uganda and that this is not a crime. They are accusing me of being a Ugandan who has re-entered Uganda from Kenya. Why didn’t they intercept Yoweri Museveni and accuse him of re-entering Uganda from Tanzania earlier this week?" read part of her statement.

Uganda is yet to reopen its borders since President Yoweri Museveni ordered the closure back in March when the Covid-19 pandemic hit the country.

Nyanzi also questioned why Museveni was not held to similar standards after crossing to Tanzania for talks on the construction of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline from Uganda to the sea port in Tanga.

Reports indicate that Nyanzi had crossed to Kenya through a porous border point and was being trailed by Ugandan security officers thereafter.

Despite closure by both Kenya and Uganda, borderlines have been porous with a number able to cross over without detection from security officials.

Nyanzi noted that she spent the night in a cell somewhere in Busia Town after being taken in without any charges and claimed to have no whereabouts of her driver and her campaign photographer.

During her visit to Kenya, Nyanzi met Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo who she termed as the 'the most powerful African woman Member of Parliament'.

She also met renowned Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi and made tours to the Kibera slum and the Nairobi Animal Orphanage.

Nyanzi also made a stop in Kisumu where she met Boniface Ogutu Akach, the convener of Kondele Social Justice Centre in the Lakeside city.
