6 Children of Politicians With Lucrative Govt Jobs

The government employs both technocrats and politicians for one reason or another depending on the level of experience, education and roles required to play.

A number of politicians children work in top government firms and hold lucrative job offers. Some were appointed to independent offices and others to non-independent ones.

Here are a number of them who are steering the government, with most lauded for their work ethics and dedication to their offices. 

Dr Mercy Mwangangi - CAS Health

Health CAS Mwangangi is amongst President Uhuru Kenyatta's youthful appointees to the government. The CS turned down  three job offers in the lucrative health economic category to serve Kenyans.

She played a major role alongside Health CS Mutahi Kagwe during the outbreak of Coronavirus (Covid-19). The University of Nairobi alumnus previously worked at Machakos Level Five Hospital and Tharaka Nithi County.

Her mother, Florence Mwangangi is the Speaker of the County Assembly of Machakos, under Governor Alfred Mutua.

Noordin Haji - Director of Public Prosecutions

DPP Noordin Haji is one of the key public servants aiding Kenyatta in safeguarding his legacy. 

Haji is leading the frontline in the war against corruption, working alongside the Director of Criminal Investigation, George Kinoti and officials from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission. 

"If there was a dream for Kenya, that dream is to ensure that we live by the ideals of the constitution," Haji stated on August 27. 

Haji's father, Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji was the Minister of Defence from 2008 to 2013.. He is among the few appointees to have served under retired President Mwai Kibaki and the incumbent Kenyatta. 

Lukoye Atwoli - Kenya Medical Association

Lukoye is the Dean of Medical College at Aga Khan University. He is also a professor of psychiatry with extensive leadership, teaching, and academic research.

The medic is also a visiting scientist at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health and an honorary associate professor at the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health, University of Cape Town. 

He currently serves as the Vice President of the Kenya Medical Association and holds positions with the African Association of Psychiatrists and World Psychiatric Association.

His father, Francis Atwoli is the Secretary General of Central Organisation Trade Union COTU. Atwoli is also a lifetime KANU member and a Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) crusader. 

Kennedy Kalonzo and Kevin Musyoka 

Kevin Musyoka and Kennedy Kalonzo are the sons of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.  

Kennedy was nominated to serve as a Member of Parliament in the East African Legislative Assembly (Kenya Chapter). Kennedy represents Kenya’s interest in the assembly. 

In June 2017, he explained that his father's party sent him to the assembly to deputise former Kamukunji MP Simon Mbugua owing to his skills in consultancy and strategy development.

“I have been consulting for the Wiper Party for a while, something I immensely enjoy. I have been making my own contribution in strategy and I believe that is how I ended up with the nomination,” he detailed.

His brother Kevin Musyoka was also appointed to the Tourism Regulatory Authority Board in August 2020 to serve as a member.

His nomination was approved by Tourism CS Najib Balala. 

June Ruto - Kenya’s Diplomat to Poland

 June Ruto plays the role of a Chargee D’Affaires. This is a diplomat who heads an embassy in the absence of the ambassador. 

Such a role is usually created when two countries do not have full diplomatic relations.

June, holds a degree in International Communication. She joined the diplomatic service in 2014 and had previously been serving as second counsel in the Kenyan embassy of Rome, Italy.

Her father is the Deputy President of Kenya, William Ruto. A seasoned politician and a 2022 Presidential aspirant.
