On October 6, a 31-year-old man in Transmara West set his house on fire, an act allegedly fuelled by growing suspicion that his wife was having an affair.
The Tuesday night incident left the residents of Chuseek Village in shock as they rushed to put out the blazing inferno.
The man is said to have locked his wife and three children in the house before setting it ablaze. Transmara West police boss James Kilonzo stated that the wife and two children managed to escape from the house which had been engulfed in flames.
Their 3-year-old son, however, was unlucky as he perished in the ordeal.
Authorities alluded to the fact that the neighbours were uncooperative in giving details pertaining to the incident.
“We don’t know exactly whether it’s a suicide or an accident, we are yet to get full details. Neighbours aren’t willing to open up and tell the story, what we know so far is that two bodies have been burnt beyond recognition,” he said.
A member of Nyumba Kumi, who sought anonymity, said that the deceased accused the wife of infidelity, claiming the 3-year-old son was not his biological son.
The two bodies were moved to the Migori Level Four Hospital as police proceeded with their investigations.
In an earlier address, Health Chief Administrative Secretary Mercy Mwangangi had warned families against domestic violence and cautioned that the state would dispense justice to the perpetrators.
“We want to remind everyone that the law has not been suspended and that it will catch up with those who mete violence on others during this period,” Mwangangi warned.
