Two trailers burst into flames after they were involved in a road accident along the Bungoma-Malaba Highway.

A trucker, Elijah Mwangi who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke, explained that the crash occurred after one of the drivers of the trailers lost control, ramming the other.

"One of the truck had its steering lock leading to the accident. One vehicle was travelling from Mombasa to Tororo while the other was transporting skin products from Kampala," he explained.

The trailer hit the other truck from the back, where the driver was reportedly using a gas cylinder to prepare food.

Another eyewitness however explained that the impact of the crash may have ignited the fire.

The incident caused heavy traffic on the road as residents engaged in efforts to put out the fire.

No casualties were reported after the incident as the injured were taken to Bungoma Level V Hospital for treatment.

The trucks were later cleared from the road and normal traffic resumed.

A few accidents have been reported on the road these past few weeks.

According to a report released by the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA), 2,689 persons had lost their lives between January 1 and September 30, 2020, compared to the same period last year where 2,655 lives were lost which translates to an increase of 1.3%.

In 2019, one person died and several others injured after a lorry collided with a car along the Malaba-Kanduyi highway in Bungoma County.

In yet another accident, several people were injured after a trailer lost control, and rammed eight vehicles along the Maai Mahiu-Limuru escarpment.
