President Uhuru Kenyatta met Kisii bodaboda operators on Wednesday, October 21, after protests that he had kept them waiting for too long.

The operators, in their hundreds, stated that they had been told that President Kenyatta would address them but were disappointed when the promise took too long to materialise.

Media reports from the previous day had indicated the head of state would meet the boda boda riders in one of his public engagements.

“I woke up so early that I did not take breakfast just to come and meet the president to keep up waiting for so long,” one of the operators told the media.

Many of them were hooting in protests while others were chanting Deputy President William Ruto’s moniker “hustler”.

When the president met them alongside ODM leader Raila Odinga, they used the chance to popularise the BBI Report.

Uhuru stated that the proposals would help the youth start sustainable businesses instead of relying on handouts.

He praised the contribution of the boda boda business by providing quick logistics and transport solutions.

The Head of State’s schedule was packed with activities from donating a 62-seater bus to Shabana FC, receiving the BBI report at the newly built Kisii State Lodge to opening the Central Bank of Kenya’s new bureau in Kisii.

During the BBI event, President Kenyatta heaped praised on the documents, urging Kenyans to embrace the benefits outlined in the proposals.

The 180-page document outlines sectors that require reforms to make the country more progressive, cohesive and inclusive.

“We have an opportunity to look at those things that make us not move forward. It is a moment for us. It is an opportunity where am encouraging each one of us to read with a view not of contestation but of making it even better,” he added.

While commissioning the Kisii CBK branch, the Head of State stated that the new facility will ease the circulation of currency in the South Nyanza region by eliminating the logistics of transporting money from Kisumu.
