Tononoka High School in Mombasa is mourning the death of its principal who died from Covid-19 related complications.

The school's deputy principal confirmed to Daily Nation that Mohammed Khamis died after testing positive for the virus.

Tononoka and the Star of the Sea High School were shut down on Wednesday, October 21, after 15 teachers reportedly tested positive for Covid-19.

Tononoka alone recorded 11 cases including the deceased principal.

Mombasa County Commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo confirmed that the schools had been closed for two weeks to allow for fumigation.

"This is to inform you that all school operations have been temporarily suspended with effect from today, Monday, October 19 to allow fumigation. The school normal operations will resume on Monday, November 2," reads a notice from the school.

The incident came a week after schools re-opened on October 12 following Education CS George Magoha’s directive on the resumption of phased re-opening.

Around the same period, the Ministry of Health recorded a spike in daily Covid-19 cases across the country.

The spike raised concerns among sector players and parents over the likelihood of closure of all learning institutions over the spike.

Education CAS Zack Kinuthia also noted that schools would not be shut down again and national exams would proceed as planned.

The Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam is scheduled for March 22, 2021, with the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Exams (KCSE) commencing on March 25, 2021.

The virus has so far claimed 902 lives across the country with positive cases nearing 50,000.
