In the heart of West Pokot lies a church that has grown in reputation due to countless visits by Kenya's political bigwigs when in need of divine favour.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Deputy President William Ruto, Senate Majority Leader Sam Poghisio and West Pokot Govenor John Lonyangapuo are just a few notable leaders who have made their way to the controversial church.

Dubbed the New Jerusalem Church of Dini Ya Roho Mafuta Pole Afrika, the church predates Kenya's independence.

Lucas Pkech, the founding leader of the church was among the 400 members who were massacred in 1953, after the colonial government perceived the denomination to be a sect due to its clamour for independence.

In what has since been known as the Kolowo (Baringo County) massacre, members hold an annual event to remember their fallen comrades.

In 2016, North Rift leaders have threatened to sue Britain for historical injustices meted out on the church members.

A monument in memory of those who killed was constructed and officially opened by former West Pokot County Governor Simon Kachapin.

Speaking to the media recently, one of the church members explained why their church was popular with Kenya's political elite.

"When we pray for that particular person and his offering deemed to be acceptable, then he/she will clinch whichever seat they seek after we anoint them with our special oil," the member explained.

It is customary for church members to enter the compound without shoes.

All members don ankle-long robes with women and men not allowed to enter the sanctuary using the same door.

The church has its headquarters in Tamugh Village in West Pokot County. It has over 100,000 members in West Pokot and Baringo counties
