For the past months motorists using the Thika Superhighway have seen construction works progress at an increased pace.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has been undertaking improvement projects on the highway especially with the erection of footbridges.

Conspicuous on the road is the Kenya School of Monetary Studies (KSMS)/ Survey footbridge with a colour palette of yellow and black making it stand out from its environs.

Its design is also advanced from the previously erected bridges along the road. It has lights on the steps as well as overhead lighting to enhance security at night.

The Bridge at Survey and the other one at Garden City cost about Ksh392 million and are part of the infrastructure layout for the Bus Rapid Transport System (BRT).

The Survey footbridge was commissioned for construction over three years ago to facilitate safe crossing for pedestrians heading to Mathare North and the Kenya College of Accountancy. However, construction stalled.

With its completion, KeNHA is now expected to remove all safety bumps installed in the location to speed up traffic flow.

KeNHA Director General Peter Mundinia had earlier in the year promised to fast track their completion noting that delays in their construction were due to the importation of steel from china.

The Witeithie footbridge was completed in 2019 and is already in use by the public.

KeNHA was in August 2020,  forced to respond after motorists raised concern over a steel structure supporting the footbridge, with many stating that it could pose a danger to motorists and pedestrians.

The authority noted that the footbridge was still under construction and the steel poles put in place were only a stop-gap measure.

The construction of the four footbridges along the highway began back in 2017 at the cost of Ksh820 million
