Interior CS Fred Matiang’i surprised a widow with a new house when he handed over the keys on Friday, November 20, 2020.
CS Matiang’i unveiled the new house in Kibichiku, Kiambu County which he had donated money for, alongside senior members of the National Police Service.
The widow had lost her husband, John Njenga, a police officer who died during a terror attack at Yumbis Police Camp in Dadaab, Garissa County in July.
“Today we honour the memory of John Njenga, a gallant police officer who lost his life during the Garissa Yumbis attack. I am grateful to senior officers in NPS who, out of love and sympathy, contributed to the completion of the late Njenga's home,” the CS said while handing over the keys.
Also present during the handover was Kiambu Governor James Nyoro, Kiambu Woman Representative Gathoni Wamuchomba and County Commissioner Wilson Wanyanga.
Gunmen attacked the Yumbis Rural Border Patrol Unit (RBPU) camp by launching explosives, and heavy gunfire ensued.
The late officer was swift in his actions to repel the suspected Al-Shabaab attackers.
Njenga succumbed to injuries at Hagadera IRC Hospital where he and his colleagues were being treated.
Families of departed police officers have had to wait long periods before accessing gratuity funds.
There is also a Widows and Children Pension Scheme that, though not paid in lump sum, is also sent to the bereaved family.
Police officers also benefit from an insurance scheme which is part of the ongoing reforms in the National Police Service.
