Suspected al Shabaab militants attacked an armoury at the Amuma Patrol Base on Wednesday, December 2 leaving one police officer injured.

The patrol base is located in Fafi, Garissa county with the heavily armed militants of unknown number storming in at dawn and opened fire.

One of the officers attached to the base was shot in the arm and on his back before being rushed to hospital where he is undergoing treatment and is in stable condition.

An officer who was present in the patrol base has been reported missing with a search launched to determine his whereabouts, according to Daily Nation.

The shootout between the suspected al Shabaab militants and the officers lasted about 15 minutes before the police overpowered them, forcing their retreat.

The armoury is said to have suffered a considerable amount of damage after the militants hit it using a rocket-propelled grenade.

Reports indicate that the militants also fired at a Land Cruiser that was parked in the base leaving all its four tyres deflated.

The attack comes barely a week after Garissa University terror attack suspect Rashid Mberesero reportedly committed suicide inside Kamiti Maximum Prison on Friday

The Tanzanian terror suspect was sentenced to life imprisonment in July 2019, for his role in the 2015 Garissa University College attack, which left 148 people dead.

Mberesero was handed the term after he was arrested at the scene of the massacre, and could not explain his presence, the court heard.
