Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko went on a self-drive on Saturday morning, December 19, to reflect on his life after impeachment and to enjoy a breath of fresh air. He also took time to speak on his exit from office.

Sonko was spotted inside his Cadillac Escalade, a day after the government reportedly stripped him off bodyguards and official government vehicles.

"As I said before, there is life after politics. I am excited to go back to my life and to be with the ordinary people who have been supporting me all my political life.

"My good friend the Speaker of Senate (Ken Lusaka) told me he was under instructions from State to breach the law in presiding over my impeachment because he was scared of the wheelbarrow scandal which occurred when he was Bungoma Governor, being brought back," Sonko claimed.

He also alleged that some of his former colleagues in the Senate sacrificed him because of political pressure emanating from their party bosses who called them  personally, one by one, to with instructions to impeach him (Sonko).

"I was not born in State House and my father was not President nor Prime Minister and Vice President as well. To my beautiful wife and daughter whose names were dragged into this mess while the trip was state-approved, continue to be strong women," he said appearing to throw well calculated jibes at President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

Sonko further claimed that Senators who voted against him were each paid Ksh 2 million bribe to execute the plan.

In the morning drive, the former governor was listening to a song loaded with messages on human hypocricy and adopting the Biblical analogy from the story of Jesus who was betrayed by his follower. The song was clearly targeted at his alleged political nemesis.

The embattled politician, however, did not disclose where he was driving himself to.

On Friday, December 18, the police and county askaris guarding Sonko's homes in Nairobi and Mombasa were also reportedly recalled. On the same day, the swearing-in ceremony of Speaker Benson Mutura, who was to take over as Acting Governor for 60 days failed to take place.

According to the Assumption of Office Committee Chairperson Justus Kathenge, the judge who was to preside over the ceremony arrived late. The stipulated time for conducting such ceremonies is between 10 am and 2 pm.

Sonko was impeached on Thursday night, December 17, by the Senate after 27 out of 45 Senators voted to uphold the motion fronted by MCAs.

The decision followed two-day proceedings with Sonko being accused of gross misconduct, violation of the constitution, crimes under national law, and abuse of office. Senators upheld the decision made by MCAs to impeach Sonko on Thursday, December 3. 88 lawmakers had voted in favour of the governor's ouster.
