Universities Resuming Studies in January 2021

University students across the country are preparing to return to their institutions of higher learning after a disrupted 2020 characterised by long breaks as a result of the  Covid-19 pandemic.

Throughout the nine months, since the virus hit the country in March, various institutions kept postponing the resumption of studies with only fourth-year students in a some universities allowed back in school. 

With January, however, most institutions are ready for the full resumption of studies even though some classes will be carried out exclusively online.

Here are five Kenyan universities set to resume in January 2021.

In December 2020, Kenyatta University announced that it was expecting students in various programmes back from Monday, January 4.

For face to face teaching and learning groups, final year students in the School of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy completing their second semester, will resume between January 2, and January 3, 2021, along with continuing students in the same faculties for the commencement of their third semester.

Also reporting on the same date will be the newly admitted students in the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Engineering, Architecture, BSC (FN&D) and third-year Nursing students.

Continuing fourth-year full time and part-time students will resume on January 4, 2021.

January 9 and January 10, 2021, will be for the arrival and registration of newly-admitted first-year full-time and part-time Undergraduate and Postgraduate students, all continuing Certificates, Diploma, Postgraduate Diploma, Masters and PhD students.

For online teaching and learning groups, only second and third-year full-time and part-time students will commence their learning on January 4, 2021.

Online learning and teaching will commence on January 11, 2021.

University of Nairobi

Beginning Monday January 4, the University of Nairobi (UoN) will be expecting various categories of students back on campus for both in-person classes and online programmes. 

The various categories of students that are expected to start their studies on Monday include years II, III and IV BSc Nursing Sciences students as well as years II, III, V, and VI Pharmacy students.

Others include year one students of the College of Biological & Physical Sciences (CBPS)  and College of Health Sciences (CHS), Year four students of the College of Health Sciences (CHS) as well as year two, three and four students of College of Biological & Physical Sciences.

On Monday, January 11, year two, three and four Veterinary, Engineering, Architecture and Education students will also be expected to check-in for in-campus studies.

Year one, two, three and four students of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences will be expected to sign up on the same day for online studies.

Moi University, in a circular, noted that it will be expecting learners in two batches. The first group will report on Monday, January 4 while the second group will report back on Monday, January 11.

The January 4th team includes all continuing students in all programmes at the College of Health Sciences as well as those from the school of nursing, Public Health, Law, Tourism and Hospitality.

Those from the School of Engineering, Social Sciences, Eldoret West campus School of Business and Economics, School of Education as well as all students from the Coast and Nairobi Campuses are expected to report on January 11.

Egerton University

At Egerton University's Njoro Campus, continuing students in the faculties of Health Sciences, Veterinary Medicine and Surgery, Health Sciences and others are expected to report on Friday, January 8, in preparation for classes set to begin on Monday, January 11.

At the same campus, first-year students are also expected to report on Monday, January 4, ahead of the orientation slated for between Wednesday, January 6 and Friday, January 8.

At the Nakuru Campus, all continuing students from the department of Health Sciences are expected to report on Friday, January 8.

All continuing law students are expected to report on Monday, January 11 for the continuation of exams while first year should be in the institution by Monday, January 4.

For Mt Kenya University, however, the resumption of studies for all students in January 2021 will be for examinations.

According to a circular that had been issued by the Registrar of Academic Affairs, the institution resumed studies between September and December 2020.

The students are expected to report to school on January 11 to sit for the examinations.

"Please note that teaching and learning in the September/December 2020 semester will end on December 5, 2020.  The end of September/December 2020 examinations will be administered from the 11th to the 25th of January, 2021," stated the notice.
