Three women in Kianyaga, Kirinyaga county were caught on camera stealing goods from a local supermarket.

The time-stamp on the security feed indicated that the footage was recorded Saturday morning, January 2.

The CCTV video captured the three women, covered in shawls (lesos), stealing essential food items.

In what seemed to be a well-coordinated approach, one lady kept watch as the other two picked items from the shelves. Among the items stolen include cooking oil, soap and toilet paper.

They concealed the stolen goods in their long flowing skirts within seconds of taking them off the shelves. The three women were, however, oblivious to the CCTV camera which recorded their every move.

Speaking to a local media house, residents criticised the action.

"It seems some people can't resist the urge to steal," one resident noted.

"I'd advocate for people to do manual jobs in order to cater for their basic needs," another resident stated.

A section of Kenyans on social media however said the ladies might have been desperate to provide for their families given that they were determined to steal food items.

According to Gichugu OCPD Anthony Mbogo, police have already launched investigations into the matter.

The Covid-19 pandemic has seen thousands of Kenyans lose their source of income, dealing a blow to their ability to provide even the most basic needs.
