Students from Father Simon Secondary School in Nambale Sub county, Busia County, went on strike on Wednesday, January 6, just two days after school officially reopened across the country.

Reports indicated that the students staged the riot after some of them missed meals at the institution on Tuesday, January 5.

The students further claimed that a teacher at the institution had sold the foodstuffs for their own benefits during the period of the pandemic hence creating the crisis.

They were also concerned with the Board of Governance's delay in hiring teachers after the six that had taught at the school were fired during the pandemic.

A minister from Busia County Government, who was reached by Kenyans.co.ke, however, declined to comment explaining that the institution was not under the county government.

"Secondary schools are not part of the county government but are under the national government. Just ask them about the issue," the minister said.

Our attempts to reach Education CAS Zack Kinuthia for comment were, however, futile as calls went unanswered.

The riot has added on the challenges that arose since schools reopening on Monday, January 6, with other issues including transport hitch that left students stranded, lack of enough resources as well as social distancing hardships.

In Seriani School based in Baringo County, the lack of resources issue was more prevalent forcing two teachers to teach two different subjects in one classroom.

The children in the class included PP1 and Class 8 students who had been relocated from Ngambo Primary School were forced to share a classroom after their school was submerged.

The respective teachers of the two classes are seen at the blackboard with one teaching English and the other tutoring in religious studies.
