In a statement on Saturday, January 9, the DCI revealed that a report was filed when the student went missing from a renowned school in Meru county.

Detectives embarked on an operation to trace the student’s whereabouts.

The detectives noted that calls had been made to the boy’s distraught parents and relatives requesting for a ransom to secure his freedom.

"However, after days of our officers searching for him, we discovered that the student had faked his kidnapping and was hiding unperturbed at Nkubu town, extorting money from his poor parents and relatives," the DCI stated.

The detectives cautioned school going students to restrain themselves from engaging in criminal activities and instead focus on their education.

"Any form of criminal activity shall be met with the full force of the law, regardless of one’s status in society," they warned.

The police added that defilement cases have been on the rise in recent months.

"We have a responsibility to educate the public on this and other such vices. This falls within our mandate of maintaining law and order and preventing crime, as encapsulated in Cap 84 (35), laws of Kenya," the authority stated.

On January 7, 2020, Meru-based detectives pursued a bodaboda rider reported to have defiled an 8-year-old school-going child the previous day.

According to the detectives, the suspect had offered the girl a ride to her home at Baibariu in Igembe South, but along the way diverted to his house.

He allegedly later dropped the minor near their homestead before going into hiding.
