The family of the woman who died hours after being thrown out of a moving matatu in Juja, Kiambu County, has revealed her final moments before she died.
Speaking to the Standard, Isaac Muthua, brother to the deceased, narrated that Judy Wanjiku experienced convulsions right after the matatu incident. Reports indicated that Wanjiku, who was epileptic, kept asking for her brother when she regained consciousness.
Muthua said that as soon as he arrived at the scene, he accompanied his sister to Equity Afya clinic in Ruiru, Kiambu County before being referred to Thika Level 5 hospital.
Wanjiku was discharged after showing no signs of injuries. The brother stated that his sister was advised by the doctors to report to the hospital in case she experienced any more convulsions.
According to Muthua, Wanjiku spent the better part of Saturday night, talking with him and her boyfriend on Whatsapp.
"On Saturday night, Wanjiku was quite well, she was even cracking jokes and chatting with the boyfriend. When she went to sleep, she told me not to wake her up early as she had a headache and wanted to rest," he stated.
Convinced she was fine, the brother left her house but the following morning, Muthua received a call from her neighbours that his sister had been found lying unconscious next to her bed.
Reports indicated that the neighbours had forced their way into the house at around 10 am after Wanjiku failed to respond when they called out.
Wanjiku's father, Elizaphan Nyaga, demanded justice for her daughter, noting that the family had lost their kin who had a bright future ahead.
"We've lost a breadwinner. Someone we invested so much hope in. She had started getting us out of poverty and was about to start her family," the 62-year-old father narrated.
The matatu incident which occurred on Saturday, February 6, saw Wanjiku pushed out of a matatu by the driver with the help of his two touts over a row of an additional Ksh100 fare.
Witnesses at the scene reported that the driver wanted to run Wanjiku over before bystanders came to intervene. The National Police Service (NPS) issued a statement regarding the incident, detailing that the matatu had been impounded at Wanguru police station in Mwea. However, the driver and the touts are still at large.
"Our attention has been brought to an unfortunate incident where a lady was allegedly pushed out of a moving vehicle in Juja...the driver and conductor are still at large. We assure you that action will be taken against the culprits. Further updates to follow," read a statement by the NPS.
