The Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company (NWSC) on Wednesday, February 17, issued a water disruption notice affecting a number of Nairobi estates.

The utility provider announced the shut-down of a water supply pipeline along Mombasa Road due to the ongoing construction of the Nairobi Expressway.

“The shutdown will facilitate interconnection of the relocated pipeline to the old pipeline at Southern Bypass starting from 6:00 am on Thursday, February 18, 2021 to Friday, February 19, 2021, at 6:00 am,” the notice read.

The exercise will enable the release of the median section of Mombasa Road to the contractor to proceed with the pending construction.

Here are the areas that will not receive water during the period:

• Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), Athi River Export Processing Zone (EPZ).

Coca Cola , Mukuru kwa Njenga, Imara Daima, estates and Industries along North Airport Road and Embakasi village as well as Tassia estate .

• General Services Unit and Administration Police training schools and Nairobi Inland Container depot

• Industries along Masai road and adjacent areas

Residents were urged to use available water sparingly as the utility company moves to ensure supply is restored as soon as possible.

Conserving water at home can be conducted in various ways including ensuring you turn off the faucet when brushing your teeth, limiting the water you use when washing clothes and recycling it to clean the toilet.

Households also unknowingly lose water through leaks and are therefore advised to check taps for leaks that could cost individuals thousands of litres of water a year.

In a revelation made in estimates of the supplementary budget tabled before Parliament on Tuesday, February 10, Kenyan taxpayers will fork out Ksh2.1 billion to relocate water and sewerage lines along the multi-billion Nairobi Expressway road project.

The amount is one of the hidden costs of the construction of the double-decker highway with the money going to relocate the Northern Collector line that will be supplying water to Nairobi.
