A section of Kenyans on Thursday, February 18, tore into BBC Correspondent Larry Madowo over remarks he made regarding availability of water in the country.

Madowo had responded to media counterpart Erica Simon who appeared astounded by the current water crisis in the state of Texas.

"This is not a third-world country. This is Houston, Texas. I spotted a line of people filing up buckets of water from a spicket at Haden Park. Why? Millions either have no water or are under a Boil Water Advisory," Erica stated.

In his response, Madowo appeared to say that Kenyan villages were doing better than Texas with regards to availability of water, a response that sparked debate among Kenyans.

"I’m from “a third world country” and we have running water in my village," Madowo stated.

Kenyans responded to the famed journalist, some saying that he was out of touch with what's happening in the country.

"I get amused at how most Africans are quick to point out, ohhh in my village we have running water and all the other stuff that make us feel a little above these developed countries, yet we all know the mess on the ground, we get selective real quick.

"Comparing the situation in Texas to what we have in Kenya is inaccurate. Most of us have lived the Texas experience most of our lives. We just adapted, built our own and moved on.

"But it is true... you must be out of touch indeed! Things are changing fast... and you seem not to catch up

"Really, stop chest-thumping. Kwa ground vitu ni different.unless unasema running water in river Sondu, river Nyando...et all.. to lake Victoria.

"The third world country spokesperson disown larry he's not one of us," read some of the comments by netizens.

Others, however, came to the anchor's side, and defended him for his remarks. The celebrated journalist has gained international prominence since he became the news anchor in the flagship program BBC World News America.

Larry notably covered the recent US elections - and received worldwide acclamation from viewers.
