A hotel proprietor was on Monday, February 22, shot dead by two gunmen posing as customers in Busia County.

According to the local police, the incident took place at 8 p.m. when the unidentified men accessed the Texas Annex hotel establishment.

The deceased, Alfred Obayo, was allegedly seated at the balcony of his hotel when one of the two men drew a gun and shot him at close range. The gunmen escaped after committing the crime.

In a statement, Busia County Governor Sospeter Ojammong condemned the incident describing Obayo as one of the businessmen that had contributed to the progression of the hotel industry in the county.

"I urge the police to move with speed and investigate the cause of the incident and bring perpetrators to book; the era of "business rivalry," has no room in modern Kenya," he noted.

The County boss further called collaborative efforts to ensure CCTV cameras were installed in all major public facilities across the county to capture crucial evidence.

There have been cases of businessmen being killed by gangs in the county. In October 2020, a Busia businessman was attacked by an armed gang that raided his home in Siaya.

A police incident report revealed that the man was attacked by people armed with a rifle in his Sega home.

Siaya County Police Commander Francis Kooli disclosed that the 48-year-old was beaten and suffered deep cuts but no property was stolen.

"He had deep cuts in the head and neck. It is alleged that one of the thugs was armed with a rifle but we have ascertained that no shot was fired," Kooli said, adding police were searching for the criminals.
