A teacher hacked a colleague with a panga as they fought over a female university student who was on teaching practice at the school.
The incident occurred at Karoti Girls High School Mwea, Kirinyaga County, on Wednesday, March 3.
Police officers who rushed to the school to investigate the case declined to reveal specifics on the cause of the clash between the duo.
The officers, however, said that they restored sanity in the school as the occurrence had caused drama in the institution and uncertainty among the students.
"The teacher was arrested and taken to Wanguru Police Station while the injured one was rushed to hospital. His colleague had hacked him with the panga," police said adding that the teacher sustained a deep cut across the head.
The incident came at a time when the Interior and Education Ministries are grappling with curbing the rise of criminal activities in schools. Education CS George Magoha said that the rate of student attacks on teachers and drug abuse had risen after schools reopened on Monday, January 4.
Learners in various institutions across the country were reported to have burnt dorms, assaulted teachers and their fellow students with crude weapons.
Reports of teachers attacking each other were rarely recorded and it wasn't ascertained whether the ministry and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will take action against the Karoti Girls High School teachers.
TSC may instigate disciplinary action, expel or deregister the teachers. In 2020, over 30 teachers were sent home over multiple scandals ranging from sex to fraud, in accordance with Section 30 (1) (e) of the Teachers Service Commission Act.
"The commission may, after inquiry, cause to be removed from the register the name of any person who the commission has directed should be removed as a result of disciplinary proceedings instituted under this Act," the law reads.
The tutors were banned from teaching in any of Kenya's public or private schools.
