President Uhuru Kenyatta has cautioned Kenyans to be wary of politicians who traverse the country while issuing fake promises, accusing them of derailing his agenda while stealing from the government.

The head of state addresses the residents of Maralal, Samburu County, on Friday, March 5, where he rallied the nation to support the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) rather than leaders who are focused on the 2022 campaigns.

"I have been commissioning water, roads, electricity and other projects. Some have been coming here with sweet words, asking you to vote for them. Be careful because they will even snatch your wives. Do not entertain them.

"I am keen on ensuring that we bring clean water and electricity to this region. The only best way to do so is to focus and to tell those who want to lead in the future to stop bothering me," Kenyatta said.

He reiterated that the BBI, which some Jubilee Party members have opposed, was meant to unite the country and not a means of staying in power after his term ends in 2022.

Kenyatta lauded the county's MCAs who passed the bill and urged them to be prepared for the referendum.

"The BBI is not and will never be my project. It is for the people of Kenya. Through it, we want to uplift citizens' lives, foster peace and bring more developments," the President assured.

On Monday, January 18, Kenyatta revealed that over Ksh 2 billion was being stolen daily. He added that anti-BBI crusaders were spreading malice about the document yet they were stealing from their own government.

"These people should not mislead the public that Ksh 2 billion will be spent on BBI, yet what they steal every day is more than Ksh2 billion. These people are useless, and I will say it openly, how much do they spend every year?" Kenyatta ranted.

In a thinly veiled attack at his opponents, he warned that he does not intend to hand over the country to thieves when he retires in 2022. He lamented that some leaders were hell-bent on harassing Kenyans and he (the President) won't tolerate their behaviour.

His sentiments irked a number of leaders in government, led by his Deputy President William Ruto, who claimed that Kenyatta was the one engaging and walking with thieves

"There are people plotting to push me out of the Jubilee government. I'd like to ask when seeking leadership on Jubilee party, was Uhuru with me or with the thieves he's currently with?" Ruto wondered.
