Citizen TV's Lulu Hassan Wins Award for Maria Show

Citizen TV anchor Lulu Hassan Hassan, who also doubles up as a television producer, has won an award for her show Maria which airs on the same channel.

The media personality bagged the best producer in the TV Drama Award during the Women in Film Awards 2021 (WIFA) ceremony held on Wednesday, March 10.

"I have received some good news. Thank you God and thank you all. I am forever grateful," she shared on her social media platforms upon being announced the winner.

Also victorious was Maria lead actress Yasmin Said who walked away with the Best Actress in a TV Drama Award.

Lulu Hassan has been involved in the production of local shows including Maza which was the first Swahili telenovela produced in Kenya.

Through their production company, Jiffy pictures, which she runs together with husband and co-anchor Rashid Abdallah, the couple have produced Kovu and a new show dubbed Dora.

Also recognised at the ceremony was Kenyan filmmaker, writer, producer, and founder of Docubox Judy Kibinge who took home the most influential woman personality.

Other winners were Toni Kamau (Best Producer Film), Angela Wamae (Best Editor), Damaris Irungu (Scriptwriter- Film) Serah Mwihaki (Scriptwriter - TV).

The awards which are in their second year, are organised by Beyond the Film organisation and provide an opportunity to recognise women filmmakers in Kenya.

The 2021 award theme was ” Woman Filmmaker Changing the Game“.

Lulu Hassan and her husband Rashid Abdalla, are no strangers to winning awards due to the Maria Show which resonated with the Kenyan audience.

The show earned the lead actress Yasmin Said (Maria) at the 2020 Kalasha Awards as Best Lead Actress in the TV Drama category. The series also secured the Best TV Drama at the awards.

She explained that they look to create high-quality content in their productions. 

"If you look at the response on our shows, what stands out is how different we are from other production companies. We heavily invest in our stories," Lulu Hassan exclusively informed Kenyans.co.ke on October 22, 2019.
