Comedian Eric Omondi has issued a statement following his arrest over illegally producing and distributing unauthorised films.

Omondi, who was released on Friday, March 12, indicated that he called Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) chair Ezekiel Mutua and apologised.

"Daktari Ezekiel Mutua is of the very strong opinion that Wife Material does not have to be dirty to sell. I completely agree with him and I have sent him a personal apology," Omondi said.

The comedian added that his only intention was to entertain and enhance cohesion between Countries in East Africa. He acknowledged that new ideas always were hard to be accepted especially in the initial stages.

"The vision is to take over Africa and the Dream is to lift the East African and Kenyan flags to the World and that requires a rigorous and vigorous creative process.

"The creative process can be long and tedious and whenever a new idea is born it comes with a lot of teething problems. We promise to be better and do better," Omondi vowed.

The entertainer was arrested by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) following complaints by the KFCB boss.

"He was arrested for violating the provisions of the Films and Stage Plays Act Cap 222 of the Laws of Kenya by producing and distributing unauthorized films dubbed "Wife Material," KFCB CEO said.

"Protection of children from exposure to harmful content remains our core mandate and any artist producing any content for public consumption must ensure that they comply with the provisions of the Films and Stage Plays Act Cap 222 of the Laws of Kenya," he added.

Mutua has since stated that the arrest against Omondi was not meant to wage a war against artists and youth.

"It's against dirty content. The intention is not to harass artists or stifle creativity. The idea is to promote clean content and protect children against exposure to adult content!" Mutua stated.

Omondi and his crew were all freed on a Ksh50,000 police bond and will appear in court on Thursday, March 18.
