A publication on the People Daily on Friday, March 19 revealed the extent to which police officers, including those in senior ranks, have been going to get promotions.

The report established that a number of officers had been forging academic papers to suggest they had undergone specialised training needed to move up the cadre.

The apprehended group had been undergoing Police Legal Studies at the National Police College main campus in Kiganjo, Nyeri County.

After undergoing disciplinary action, two officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations(DCI) were sent back to their work stations after being found guilty. They will await further punitive measures while at their work stations.

A senior police officer was quoted by the People Daily indicating that the officers had been stealing their colleague’s examination results and representing them as theirs.

He added that the management had put in measures that would ensure that exam malpractice was eliminated.

“It is on this effect that the management of the training camp ordered that officers show their full weekly orders for every examination that they claim to have passed,” the officer said.

A circular issued this week informed officers who intended to pursue their education that they had to show their past results so as to enroll for new courses.

“Those who have in the past produced photocopied results should be informed that the representation is null and void and that they should replace them with original copies,” a part of the circular read.

Officers interested in seeking for promotions undergo training at the Kiganjo main campus. After undertaking training, the officers take an exam which determines if they are qualified or not.

The officers who faced disciplinary action were undertaking legal studies which covers several units including General Duty Police Law Examination.

The General Duty Police Law Examination covers the Criminal Procedure Code, Evidence Act 2009, Penal Code and Local Acts.

This expose comes a week after police spokesperson Charles Owino contradicted with Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i on the education credentials needed in hiring police officers.
