Nairobi City in Kenya became a topic of discussion in New York, US after the state approved the legalisation of recreational marijuana for adults.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday, March 31, signed the cannabis legislation making New York the 15th state to legalise the drug.

It was, however, after American television host Greg Kelly opened up on an alleged experience with the drug that saw him end up in Nairobi, that the Kenyan capital began to trend in the US.

Kelly who hosts Greg Kelly Reports on Newsmax TV and publicly opposed the use of marijuana disclosed a previous incident that saw him fly to Kenya with some friends and left him without any recollection of the preceding events.

"Smoking weed (aka grass) is not a good idea. I’ve tried it (back in the day) and it was worse than anything that happened to Hunter Biden.

"I toked up (became intoxicated) with some buddies in Kentucky and woke up four days later in Nairobi, Kenya. With no idea what happened. Don't do drugs," he claimed.

His post elicited reactions making the term 'Nairobi' one of the trending terms of the day in New York.

A majority of high-profile personalities poked holes in the TV host's narration of the unfolding of events.

"I mean it could have happened but it certainly wasn’t weed that made him go unconscious for four days," pro athlete John Rush stated.

"Dude’s claiming weed made him blackout for 4 days while simultaneously being able to book an international flight and navigate multiple layovers," USA Today writer Andrew Joseph chimed in.

A former congresswoman Katie Hill also expressed her cynicism over the claims by Kelly with a sarcastic remark.

"Cheers to all who have “toked up” in Kentucky and ended up in Kenya because that’s definitely a thing that happens when you smoke weed," she stated.

The US TV host has previously been in the news for criticising New York's legalization of recreational marijuana.

In passing the law, New York will also expunge the criminal records of people previously convicted of crimes that would be legal under the new law.

"This is a historic day in New York, one that rights the wrongs of the past by putting an end to harsh prison sentences, embraces an industry that will grow the Empire State's economy, and prioritizes marginalized communities so those that have suffered the most will be the first to reap the benefits," Cuomo said in a statement.
