The body of an American attached at the US embassy in Nairobi was found hanging in his hotel room in Gigiri on Wednesday, April 7.

Police reports indicate that the 58-year-old was found hanging near the window and had left behind a suicide note, which is currently under investigation to ascertain its validity.

"The body was found hanging near the room window. He seemed to have died long before the security team arrived there,” one of the officers told K24.

A U.S. Embassy Nairobi spokesperson confirmed the incident, but refrained from revealing the identity of the deceased as his immediate family members had not been informed.

“We can confirm the death of a U.S. government employee. U.S. Embassy Nairobi extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased,” the spokesperson said.

His colleagues revealed that the official had arrived in the country several days ago and had gone into two weeks of isolation. He was set to report back to work on Wednesday but failed to show up.

After failing to pick calls, his colleagues alerted the security officers who rushed into his hotel room only to find his body hanging. The body has been taken to the mortuary awaiting postmortem.

Detectives attached to the  Directorate of Criminal Investigations have launched investigations into the incident.

In yet another case, an officer attached to the office of the Interior allegedly killed his wife and turned the gun on himself.

Speaking on the issue, Interior CS Fred Matiang'i stated that the ministry was keen to address the numerous psychological challenges experienced by police officers.
