A 15-year-old girl who sat for the recently concluded 2020/21 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) committed suicide on Wednesday, April 7.

Esther Kemunto Omaya sat for her KCPE at Kiabira Primary School in Manga Sub-County, Nyamira County.

By the time of publishing this article, her reasons for committing suicide are unknown since no suicide note was found.

Kemunto’s body was discovered hanging from a store hanging on a sisal rope tied to the roof near her parents’ house in Nyagetugo Village

According to her elder brother, Kemunto might have committed suicide shortly after lunch.

“My sister had not shown any signs of depression. She was always jovial,” said Kemunto’s elder sibling.

Nyamira County Commissioner Amos Mariba, has expressed concern over the number of suicide cases.

“Families should be sensitized on how to handle depression. If depression can be detected early, then deaths can be averted,” he said.

Kemunto’s body was taken to Kisii County Teaching and Referral Hospital morgue.

This incident adds to a worrying trend of rising suicides cases among learners in the country over recent years.

On January 12, a pupil who was set to sit for his KCPE committed suicide after he was accused of stealing Ksh20.

During the same month, another candidate took away his life after his father delayed in buying him a new mobile phone.
